Many Canadians want to know how much they’ll get from the carbon tax rebate (also called the Canada Carbon Rebate) in 2025.
That question is important because the government changed the program in 2025.
The federal fuel charge ended on March 15, 2025, so there will no longer be new consumer carbon rebate payments beyond April 2025.
What is the Canada Carbon Tax Rebate in 2025?
The Canada Carbon Tax Rebate (previously called the Climate Action Incentive Payment, now the Canada Carbon Rebate or CCR) was a tax-free amount given quarterly to eligible individuals and families to offset the cost of Canada’s federal carbon pricing system.
In 2025, the government ended the consumer carbon pricing and thus ended new rebate payments for individuals.
The last rebate for consumers was issued starting April 22, 2025 to those who filed their 2024 tax returns on time.
Who received the final Canada Carbon Tax Rebate in 2025?
Only people who met certain eligibility requirements and had their 2024 tax returns assessed on time received the final Canada Carbon Tax Rebate 2025 payment.
To qualify, recipients needed to:
- Be a resident of Canada for tax purposes.
- Live in a province where the federal fuel charge applies (Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland & Labrador)
- Be at least 19 years old in the month before the payment, or meet special conditions if under 19.
- File their 2024 income tax and benefit return, as the rebate was tied to tax filing.
If someone filed late, CRA still allowed eligibility: they could receive the final rebate after their return was assessed.
How much was the Canada Carbon Tax Rebate paid in 2025?
The amounts for 2025 followed the 2024-25 base year amounts.
The total possible annual payment for a family of four under the base rebate was up to $1,800 in the eligible provinces.
Quarterly payments were distributed over four quarters before the end.
For example, in the province of Ontario, the basic quarterly credit per person was $151.00 for the first adult.
Spouse or common-law partner received $75.50, and each eligible child contributed $37.75.
The rural supplement (20%) added extra amounts for residents outside major urban areas.
Thus, in 2025, under these rules, a household in Ontario with one adult, spouse, and two children would have received a quarterly base of:
- Adult: $151.00
- Spouse: $75.50
- Two children: 2 × $37.75 = $75.50
Subtotal = $302.00
Plus rural supplement 20% = $60.40
Total possible = $362.40 per quarter for that family (if rural) under those base rules.
But note: the actual payment you see depends on your province, household composition, and whether you qualified for the rural top-up.
When was the final Canada Carbon Tax Rebate payment issued?
The Canada Carbon Tax Rebate 2025 final payment was issued beginning April 22, 2025 to eligible individuals who filed their 2024 tax returns by the deadline.
There will be no further quarterly CCR payments after that, because the federal fuel charge was removed on March 15, 2025.
If people file late, they may still receive that final payment after assessment.
Why did the Canada Carbon Tax Rebate 2025 end?
The Canada Carbon Tax Rebate 2025 ended because the underlying carbon pricing mechanism for consumers was removed.
On March 15, 2025, the Government of Canada ceased applying the federal fuel charge, eliminating the basis for the rebate.
Since the rebate is tied directly to that charge, there cannot be new payments beyond the final one.
What should Canadians expect now that the rebate is over?
With Canada Carbon Tax Rebate 2025 concluded;
- No new rebate payments will occur for individuals beyond April 2025.
- Anyone who did not file their 2024 return may still be eligible to receive the final rebate after their return is assessed.
- The government still includes a rural supplement in the rebate system as long as the program exists.
- Small businesses have a separate carbon rebate program that also ends as part of fuel charge removal.
