Next Carbon Tax Rebate in Canada: When to Expect Your Payment

Many Canadians are wondering whether a new carbon tax rebate is coming, and when it will be paid.

The federal carbon tax rebate (formerly called the Climate Action Incentive Payment or CAIP, now Canada Carbon Rebate or CCR) has undergone major changes, and the timelines are important to understand.

Below is what the government has officially confirmed, what to expect, and what to do if you missed past payments.

What is the Canada Carbon Rebate and what changed in 2025?

The Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) is a tax-free payment intended to offset the costs of federal carbon pricing.

It used to be issued quarterly to eligible individuals in certain provinces.

However, on March 15, 2025, the federal government ended the fuel charge (carbon tax) for consumers.

That change means no new quarterly CCR payments will occur after April 2025.

When was the final carbon rebate payment issued?

The final CCR payment for individuals was made starting April 22, 2025.

That payment covered the last eligible period. After that date, there will be no further payments under the CCR program for individuals.

Will there ever be another CCR payment for individuals?

No. Because the federal fuel charge has been eliminated, the CCR program is closed for individuals. There will be no new quarterly CCR payments after April 2025.

If you were eligible but did not yet file your tax return for 2024 (or previous years), you may still receive your final payment once your return is assessed.

What about people who haven’t yet filed their tax returns?

If you didn’t file your tax return for the relevant years (2021–2024), but were eligible, you can still file and then receive the CCR payment for those years once assessed.

For example, if you file your 2024 return after April 2025, the CRA will issue your final CCR payment at that time.

Will small businesses still receive a carbon rebate?

Yes — although the rebate for individuals is closed, the Canada Carbon Rebate for small and medium-sized businesses remains active for now.

Businesses that qualify may receive payments once their tax returns are assessed.

What should people expect now and next steps

  1. There will be no new individual CCR payments after April 2025.
  2. If you were eligible but didn’t file your tax return, file it — the CRA will issue any remaining payments once it is assessed.
  3. For businesses, watch for CRA announcements about CCR payments tied to corporations.
  4. Always rely on official CRA or Canada government pages for confirmation rather than speculative media.
